Neutron background in large-scale xenon detectors for dark matter searches

چکیده
Simulations of the neutron background for future large-scale particle dark matter detectors are presented. Neutrons were generated in rock and detector elements via spontaneous fission and (α,n) reactions, and by cosmic-ray muons. The simulation techniques and results are discussed in the context of the expected sensitivity of a generic liquid xenon dark matter detector. Methods of neutron background suppression are investigated. A sensitivity of 10 − 10 pb to WIMP-nucleon interactions can be achieved by a tonne-scale detector.

Dark Matter Experiments at Boulby Mine
The Boulby Dark Matter Collaboration (BDMC) is running several experiments for particle (WIMP) dark matter search in the Underground Boulby Laboratory. These include a liquid xenon detector (ZEPLIN I) and a low pressure gas TPC with directional sensitivity (DRIFT I). Next stage double-phase xenon detectors ZEPLIN II and ZEPLIN III, and a new TPC DRIFT II will be installed at Boulby in a few mon...
متن کاملCombining dark matter detectors and electron-capture sources to hunt for new physics in the neutrino sector
In this letter we point out the possibility to study new physics in the neutrino sector using dark matter detectors based on liquid xenon. These are characterized by very good spatial resolution and extremely low thresholds for electron recoil energies. When combined with a radioactive νe source, both features in combination allow for a very competitive sensitivity to neutrino magnetic moments ...
متن کاملPrecision measurements, dark matter direct detection and LHC Higgs searches in a constrained NMSSM
We reexamine the constrained version of the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with semi universal parameters at the GUT scale (CNMSSM). We include constraints from collider searches for Higgs and susy particles, upper bound on the relic density of dark matter, measurements of the muon anomalous magnetic moment and of B-physics observables as well as direct searches for dark matter. ...
متن کاملNeutrino physics with multi-ton scale liquid xenon detectors
We study the sensitivity of large-scale xenon detectors to low-energy solar neutrinos, to coherent neutrino-nucleus scattering and to neutrinoless double beta decay. As a concrete example, we consider the xenon part of the proposed DARWIN (Dark Matter WIMP Search with Noble Liquids) experiment. We perform detailed Monte Carlo simulations of the expected backgrounds, considering realistic energy...
متن کاملov 2 00 1 Rayleigh scattering in rare - gas liquids
The Rayleigh scattering length has been calculated for rare-gas liquids in the ultraviolet for the frequencies at which they luminesce. The calculations are based on the measured dielectric constants in the gas phase, except in the case of xenon for which measurements are available in the liquid. The scattering length may place constraints on the design of some large-scale detectors, using uv l...
